My latest arrival: a genuine ex-Metropolitan Police Special Escort Group BMW K100, fresh off the trailer and into the workshop.
WHAT IS AN SEG BIKE?
The Special Escort Group (SEG) is the Metropolitan Police unit responsible for escorting and protecting Royalty, visiting heads of state and other dignitaries across London. Before the SEG moved on to newer machinery, their weapon of choice was the BMW K100 — built by Vehicle Developments to the Force's own specification.
These were no ordinary K100s. Instead of the full RT fairing, SEG bikes wore a small handlebar fairing with lower leg shields adapted and modified from the K100RT, joined to the petrol tank by a custom-made filler panel. Less bodywork meant the officer stayed visible while controlling traffic, but still had protection from the elements. They carried blue strobe warning lights front and rear, crash bars, a solo seat, panniers, a fire extinguisher and a full radio system.
Only thirty-two of each model were ever custom made, and only a handful survive today — which makes this bike a genuinely rare piece of British policing history.
THE STORY OF THIS BIKE
This K100 spent its working life escorting Royalty and dignitaries through the streets of London with the SEG. After decommissioning it passed into private hands, and it has now arrived at the Flyingbrickparts workshop to be brought back to its former glory. The plan is a careful, sympathetic recommission — preserving as much original equipment and livery as possible while making it a reliable runner again.
