My least favourite job on a Bike or Car project is bodywork painting…
I’m fine Hammerite painting and spraying bits and pieces like Calipers and Engine parts, but when it comes to Tanks, Plastics and Bodywork it’s not my core skill…
I’ve read the guidance articles, I’ve watched a million how to Videos, but I’m still not patient enough to prep, paint, prep, wait, sand, wait, paint again, wait, sand again, paint again, etc etc to get to a decent finish.
I outsourced this last time on my K75RT project – and it came back like new – but this time I’ve decided to keep the costs down and persist with it to get it at least all the same colour… partly because I have to paint it as I’ve had to source a new back end as the original was cracked and beyond repair, and partly because I want to keep overall costs down and speed it’s time to the road.
Last time, the painters took an age – over 6 months… I’m not up for that, or the bill that came with it last time… I’m also not sure it’s worth it on a Bike of this vintage.
While K75s in my opinion are a brilliant Bike the Market doesn’t yet quite agree and second hand values are low…
So it begineth… I’ve stripped and sanded the back end tail unit, and removed all plastics… I’ve used wet and dry paper and am trying my best to get a half reasonable result…
I’ve even ordered Tak cloths to get the residual dust off – so aren’t I the expert!
Primer first and I’ll attack it in two parts..
- Mudgaurds, Rear Tail, Rad Cover, Front Cover
- Tank, Front Fairing and Instrument Cover
More soon…. paints and primers all sitting waiting and a make do spray booth created in the Garage…
